The Upper West Regional Peace Council undertook the following activities between the months of January to June 2022.

MEETINGS

The upper West regional Peace Council successfully organized two council meetings over this period. These are the first quarter council meeting and the Second quarter council meeting. The secretariat also held other meetings including an interaction with a team from the German embassy, the British High commission as well as the Canadian embassy. The Council also met with COGINTA, GIZ and the LRI of the creative initiative to discuss security issues in the Region. The council also facilitated meetings of the Early Warning platform where heads of the various security services as well as other stakeholders of peace and security in the region, meet to discuss pertinent issues in relation to peace and security in the region.

CONFLICT INTERVENTIONS

The Upper West Regional Peace Council intervened in a few conflict situations in the region. These include fact-finding trips to Nandom, Wallembelle and Charia.  The Council also organized dialogue and mediation sessions to address a land dispute between Papu and Piree and the Nandom succession dispute with support from WANEP.

OUTREACH AND CAPACITY BUILDING

The Upper West Regional Peace Council with the help of WANEP organized a workshop in Tumu which was geared towards rebuilding a robust relationship between civilians and the security apparatus in the Sissala East District. The program was also a step towards the prevention of violent extremist groups from penetrating into Ghana. With support from the USAID through OTI/LRI the Peace Council organized two separate three-day workshops to build the capacity of local radio station managers and religious leaders on preventing violent extremism and also tackling the issue of religious radicalization through preaching and media broadcasting.
