His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama Inaugurates National Peace Council’s New Board.

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, marked a historic milestone with the inauguration of its newly reconstituted 13-member governing board and the Executive Secretary to the board at the Office of the President. The ceremony was graced by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, the Chief Director of the Interior, senior government officials, and representatives of religious and traditional bodies.

President Mahama charged the NPC to intensify efforts to build public trust and maintain Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of peace in West Africa. He emphasized the Council’s critical role in safeguarding national unity, urging members to remain impartial and resilient amidst political pressures. He specifically highlighted the need to support mediation efforts in chieftaincy conflicts, such as the ongoing crisis in Bawku, to secure sustainable peace.

The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, noted that the NPC is reviewing the 2024 general elections to devise strategies that reinforce national resilience and peace. He also announced Ghana’s upcoming role as chair and host of the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC), underscoring the country’s commitment to peacebuilding and human rights on a global stage.

In his inaugural address, the newly elected Chairman, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Fianu, SVD (read by Alhaji Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih) expressed profound gratitude for the trust placed in the board and reaffirmed the NPC’s mandate under Act 818 of 2011 to facilitate conflict prevention, management, and resolution. He outlined pressing challenges, including chieftaincy disputes in Bawku and Dagbon, farmer-herder tensions, and the need to prevent electoral violence. The Chairman pledged to lead with openness, fairness, and collaboration, harnessing modern strategies and indigenous mechanisms to foster lasting peace.
