On May 24, 2024 the Eastern Regional Peace Council celebrated International Women’s Day of Peace and Disarmament focusing on the role of Women in Ensuring Peaceful Elections at Suhum in collaboration with the Suhum Municipal Assembly. Women play essential roles in promoting peaceful fair elections through mediation, voter education, monitoring and advocacy. The celebration brought together women from all aspects of works in the community including women in the security services, artisans, women from various religious bodies, students and traditional authorities at Suhum Senior High Technical School. Speakers including the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive, representative of the Chief of Staff and the Suhum Omanhemaa encouraged their fellow women to be up and doing, support themselves so they can take up positions in the country not limited to political landscape but other institutions that have low number of women participation. The National Peace Council recognizes the vital contribution of women in peace and conflict prevention, management and resolution which is the main objective of the National Peace Council. It was therefore an important call to organize and celebrate this day to stretch on the importance of women in peace building as the country prepares to go to the polls. The Council again is committed to supporting and empowering women in their roles as peacebuilders and election guardians.
