Volta Peace Council Engages Over 1,000 Students at Mawuli SHS on Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention

On 21st July 2025, the Volta Regional Peace Council (VRPC) hosted a peace education and sensitization programme at Mawuli Senior High School, drawing over 1,000 students and staff to a powerful session on conflict prevention, inclusion, and youth-led peacebuilding.

The outreach forms part of the Council’s strategy to strengthen youth participation in promoting peace and reducing violence in schools. The initiative sought to:

  • Raise awareness of the National Peace Council’s (NPC) mandate,

  • Equip students with essential conflict resolution and early warning skills,

  • Promote the creation of inclusive, peaceful learning environments through school-based initiatives.

Rev. Seth Mawutor, Chairman of the VRPC, delivered a keynote address underscoring that peace is not just a concept, but a lifestyle that starts with respectful and empathetic daily interactions. He pointed to the concerning trend of violent behavior in some SHSs and urged students to reject harmful peer influence and resolve differences through constructive dialogue. He emphasized that schools must nurture both academic and moral values to support national development.

Rev. Mawutor also proposed the creation of a Peace Club at Mawuli SHS, aimed at fostering conflict resolution, peer mentorship, and advocacy for peace on campus. He called on students to take up the mantle as peace ambassadors within their school and communities.

Also present at the event were:

  • Rev. Godswill Elorm Courage, Eminent Member of the VRPC

  • Dr. David Normanyo, Executive Secretary

  • Staff of the Volta Regional Peace Council

The event successfully deepened students’ understanding of the roots of conflict and the importance of early detection, while fostering a collective responsibility to create safe, non-violent spaces for learning and personal development.
