Peace Education and Sensitization for Students in J.H.S & S.H.S – Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Regional Peace Council (ARPC), in collaboration with the Small Arms and Light Weapons Commission (SALW), organized a Peace Education and Sensitization Programme for students of South Suntreso M/A Junior High School on Friday, 10th October 2025.
The initiative formed part of ARPC’s efforts to promote peaceful coexistence, non-violence, and civic responsibility among young people in the region.
Objectives of the Programme
The peace education programme sought to:
-
Educate students on how to identify and prevent conflicts and violence within schools.
-
Establish Peace Ambassadors Clubs in J.H.S and S.H.S institutions across the region.
-
Promote peaceful coexistence among students through non-violent approaches to resolving differences.
Expected Impact
The project aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to manage conflict peacefully, foster respect and tolerance among peers, and develop a critical mass of future peace ambassadors capable of influencing their communities positively.
Key Highlights
The event was graced by Mrs. Joycelyn Anima Aboraa Boateng and Mr. Godwin Nana Amponsah, both Programmes Managers of ARPC, as well as Mr. Emmanuel Kenneth Oduro, Ag. Regional Director of the Small Arms and Light Weapons Commission (SALW).
In her remarks, Mrs. Joycelyn Boateng encouraged students to embody love and respect in their daily interactions, emphasizing that peace begins with individuals.
“Just as the Bible tells us to love our neighbour as ourselves, we should practice this not only at home but also in school, fostering peace and good relationships with one another,” she noted.
Mr. Godwin Amponsah reminded students that conflict is inevitable but violence is not, urging them to adopt dialogue and tolerance in resolving disputes.
“We should learn to respect and tolerate each other’s opinions to prevent violence and build stronger relationships,” he said.
Mr. Emmanuel Kenneth Oduro cautioned students about the dangers of illegal possession of firearms, stressing the importance of vigilance.
“Firearms in the hands of young people can lead to unintended tragedies. Report any suspicious activity or knowledge of weapons to the appropriate authorities,” he advised.
Participation
Over 120 students from the South Suntreso M/A Junior High School participated actively in the education and discussions.
The ARPC continues to engage schools and youth groups across the Ashanti Region to nurture a culture of peace and non-violence among the next generation of leaders
