Ashanti Regional Peace Council Raises Awareness of Economic Safety and Justice for Sustainable Peace
The Ashanti Regional Peace Council (ARPC), in collaboration with Garden City Radio and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Kumasi, held another radio and television outreach programme on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, under the theme “Societal Safety and Security for Sustainable Peace: Economic Safety and Justice.”
The engagement sought to educate the public on the relationship between economic safety, justice and sustainable peace, while highlighting how poverty, unemployment, inequality and economic injustice can contribute to social tensions and conflict.
Speaking during the programme, Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Badu Amoah, Regional Executive Secretary of the ARPC, explained that economic safety enables individuals and families to meet their basic needs, earn a livelihood, protect their property and participate in economic activities without undue fear of exploitation or insecurity. He further described economic justice as involving fairness, equal protection under the law, access to opportunities and equitable treatment in the distribution of economic benefits and responsibilities.
He emphasised that sustainable peace requires more than the absence of violence. Citizens must also have confidence in their ability to pursue legitimate economic opportunities and seek redress when they experience injustice.
The presentation highlighted how unemployment, poverty, rising living costs, unequal access to opportunities and financial insecurity can increase frustration and social tension. It was noted that when people perceive economic opportunities as unfairly distributed or feel that their grievances are ignored, trust in public institutions and community leadership may decline, creating conditions for hostility, crime and community disputes.
Rev. Dr. Badu Amoah called on state institutions to strengthen accountability, enforce laws fairly, improve access to justice and address legitimate public grievances. He also encouraged traditional authorities, religious leaders, civil society organisations, employers and community leaders to promote dialogue, discourage economic exploitation and support vulnerable groups.
The programme underscored the importance of transparency, accountability, equal opportunities, economic inclusion and peaceful dispute-resolution mechanisms in preventing economic grievances from escalating into conflict.
Through this outreach, the Ashanti Regional Peace Council continues to promote public awareness and stakeholder participation in building a peaceful, secure and economically just society.
Participating institutions: Ashanti Regional Peace Council (ARPC), Garden City Radio and Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Kumasi.
