The Bono East Region is one of Ghana’s sixteen administrative regions, created in 2019 following the division of the former Brong Ahafo Region. The regional capital is Techiman, a historically significant city and one of Ghana’s major commercial and agricultural centres.

The region comprises eleven Municipal and District Assemblies and is home to diverse ethnic, religious and socio-cultural groups. Agriculture and commerce are major drivers of the regional economy, with the Techiman market serving as an important trading hub connecting different parts of Ghana and neighbouring countries.

Bono East is also endowed with important cultural, historical and natural attractions, including traditional festivals, sacred sites, waterfalls and protected natural areas. The region’s diversity, strategic location and economic activities make peaceful coexistence essential to its continued development.

About the Bono East Regional Peace Council

The Bono East Regional Peace Council (BERPC) is the regional structure of Ghana’s National Peace Council (NPC) established to promote sustainable peace and strengthen mechanisms for conflict prevention, management and resolution within the Bono East Region.

The Council operates within the framework of the National Peace Council Act, 2011 (Act 818) and works with state and non-state actors to create an enabling environment for peaceful coexistence, social cohesion and sustainable development.

The Bono East Regional Peace Council was inaugurated in 2023 as part of efforts to extend the institutional structures of the National Peace Council to Ghana’s newly created regions. The Bono East Regional Peace Council, comprised of a 13-member council, has a chairman unanimously elected by the Council Members to lead its operations. Members are selected from a variety of institutions, religious organizations, traditional authorities, Civil Society Organizations, and other stakeholders engaged in conflict resolution efforts. Appointment and swearing-in of these members are conducted by the Governing Board of the National Peace Council.

Our Mandate

The Bono East Regional Peace Council is committed to facilitating and developing mechanisms for conflict prevention, conflict management, conflict resolution, and sustainable peace throughout the region.

The Council provides a neutral platform for dialogue and works collaboratively with stakeholders to address existing conflicts while identifying and responding to emerging threats to peace.

What We Do

The Council undertakes a range of peacebuilding activities, including:

– Conflict Prevention and Early Warning: Identifying potential sources of tension and facilitating timely interventions before they escalate.

– Mediation and Conflict Resolution: Facilitating dialogue between conflicting parties and supporting peaceful and mutually acceptable solutions.

– Peace Education: Promoting tolerance, non-violence, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship among communities.

– Stakeholder Engagement: Working with traditional authorities, religious leaders, security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations, women, youth, the media and local government institutions.

– Election-Related Peacebuilding: Promoting peaceful political participation and encouraging dialogue among political actors before, during, and after elections.

– Community Dialogue and Reconciliation: Creating opportunities for communities and individuals affected by disputes to engage in constructive dialogue and reconciliation.

– Capacity Building: Strengthening the ability of community leaders and other stakeholders to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts peacefully.

Peace and Security Context

As a culturally diverse and economically important region, Bono East occasionally experiences disputes arising from issues such as chieftaincy, land ownership and boundaries, political competition, farmer-herder relations, natural resource management and other community-related concerns.

The Regional Peace Council works proactively with relevant institutions and community stakeholders to prevent such disagreements from escalating into violence.

Particular emphasis is placed on early warning, dialogue, mediation and relationship-building, recognising that sustainable peace is achieved not only by responding to conflicts but also by addressing their underlying causes.

Our Approach

The Bono East Regional Peace Council believes that sustainable peace requires the participation of all sections of society.

Our approach is therefore based on inclusiveness, impartiality, dialogue, collaboration, mutual respect and non-violence.

We recognise traditional authorities, religious leaders, women, young people, persons with disabilities, political actors, security institutions, civil society organisations and community members as important partners in building and sustaining peace.

Working with Our Partners

The Council collaborates with the National Peace Council, Regional Coordinating Council, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, traditional authorities, Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, religious bodies, civil society organisations, educational institutions, media organisations, development partners and community-based organisations.

These partnerships strengthen information sharing, early warning mechanisms, mediation processes and coordinated responses to emerging peace and security challenges.
