NPC builds consensus on timeliness for adjudication of cases
The National Peace Council organized a conference in Accra on 3rd April 2024 with the theme “Building Consensus on Parliamentary Elections Petition Adjudication” to address the high volume of parliamentary election petitions that overwhelm the courts after each general election.
Various stakeholders, including representatives from the Electoral Commission, judiciary, political parties, civil society, and academia, took part in the conference.
Key topics discussed included the timeframe for submitting a petition, the process for serving respondents, and other important issues.
One suggestion made during the discussions was for the Electoral Commission to collect email addresses and contact information from parliamentary candidates to facilitate communication with the courts, with options such as email, EMS, or WhatsApp being proposed for this purpose.
