Empowering Women for Peace!
From June 23rd to 25th, 2025, the Savannah Regional Peace Council (SRPC), with support from the UNDP Ghana and funding from the Embassies of Luxembourg and Denmark, organized a transformative 3-day training for 50 women from eight communities in the West Gonja Municipality, held at the Unity Centre, Damongo.
Under the theme “Boosting Women’s Economic Resilience and Inclusion in Decision-Making and Peacebuilding,” this capacity-building initiative aimed to strengthen the participation of women in governance, peace processes, and community development efforts at the grassroots level.
The training, delivered by seasoned facilitators, focused on:
- Peacebuilding fundamentals
- Conflict early warning and early response mechanisms
- Leadership and decision-making skills
- The importance of women’s voices in governance and sustainable peace
Mbitiwurche Alijata Haruna underscored the role of women as “the backbone of peace” and highlighted the need for inclusive structures that enable women to thrive as mediators, leaders, and peace actors.
UNDP’s Melody Azinim echoed the urgency of investing in women’s empowerment, citing limited access to economic opportunities as a key barrier to female participation in peace and governance spaces. She reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting women as “critical stakeholders in governance, development, and peacebuilding.”
The participating women, drawn from Damongo, Larabanga, Nabori, Yipala, Busunu, Tailope, Mempeasem, and Bonyanto, left the training inspired, equipped, and ready to take up more active roles in safeguarding peace in their respective communities.
When women are empowered, families thrive, communities prosper, and peace endures.
