National Peace Council Engages IGP and Electoral Commission Ahead of Akwatia By-Election
The National Peace Council (NPC) has held separate engagements with the leadership of the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission (EC) as part of its commitment to ensuring peaceful and credible elections in Ghana.
On Monday, 25th August 2025, the Governing Board of the NPC, led by Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, met with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Police Administration at the Police Headquarters. The IGP assured the Council of the preparedness of the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security before, during, and after the Akwatia by-election scheduled for 2nd September 2025. He further disclosed that eight suspects involved in disturbances during the recent Ablekuma North election rerun had been arrested and processed for court, reaffirming the Police’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
On Tuesday, 26th August 2025, the NPC delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensa. She assured the Council of close collaboration between the EC and the Ghana Police Service to ensure a transparent, free, fair, and credible by-election. Mrs. Mensa emphasized the Commission’s dedication to upholding professionalism and electoral integrity.
Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, on behalf of the NPC, commended both institutions for their assurances and urged them to sustain their commitment to professionalism and neutrality, stressing that peaceful elections are vital to consolidating Ghana’s democracy and stability.
The NPC will continue to engage all key stakeholders to ensure the upcoming Akwatia by-election is conducted in a peaceful and credible atmosphere.
