Education Directors, CHASS pledged commitment to implement MoU on Religious Tolerance
Stakeholders have pledged their commitment to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to guide religious tolerance in Government Assisted and Private Mission Schools in Accra.
The pledge was made by District and Municipal Directors of Education, and the Conference of Heads of Government Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) in the Greater Accra during a day’s sensitization workshop organised by the National Peace Council (NPC), in partnership with TUDEC Development Centre-Ghana at Ashaley-Botwe in Accra.
The workshop on the theme: Promoting Religious Tolerance in Schools was geared towards deepening understanding and appreciation of the MoU which was launched on September 4, 2025.
A Governing Board Member of NPC, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu noted that Ghana is rated high on interfaith harmony, entreating Ghanaians to cherish the peace and harmony in the country.
“As a people of the same the country, we have no option than to be tolerant” he said stating that in any place where there is peace the country grows.
He said our diversity is not by accident, adding we need to embrace tolerance, respect our difference and appreciate our diversity.
The Shiekh explained that “School regulations are very important” and entreated students’ to be disciplined, adding that the “bridge between one’s purpose and aim is discipline”.
In a remark, Mr. Cafer Tepeli, President of TUDDEC touched on the essence and need for peaceful coexistence in our schools, and the need to do more to strengthen the appreciation of different faiths, cultures in our schools.
Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah, Greater Accra Regional Director of Education stated that “religious tolerance in our schools is not merely about avoiding conflict; it is about deliberately fostering an environment where every learner feels respected, safe, and free to learn, irrespective of religious background.”
“As education leaders and partners, we carry a collective responsibility to model these values through our policies, leadership practices, and daily engagements,” she added.
She described the workshop as both timely and significant, noting that “the Memorandum of Understanding we are disseminating today represents a shared commitment between the Ghana Education Service and our valued religious partners to promote tolerance while ensuring that the primary mandate of education is upheld in all our schools”.
The National President of Conference of Directors of Education (CODE), Mr. Ibrahim Mumuni who stated the commitment of the Directors in implementing the document urged stakeholders to gravitate towards best practice and ensure discipline in our schools. He called for greater discipline in our society to enhance discipline in our schools.
Mr. Vincent Esoah, Head of PRESEC, Osu and Vice Chair of the Greater Accra of the Conference of Heads of Government Assisted Schools (CHASS), who also pledged the commitment to implement the guideline.
Participants at the workshop touched on the need to continue working with the document, with best practices to engender tolerance, toleration and peace in our schools.
Present at the workshop were COMEU and the Ghana Education Service, Chaplains, and Head Teachers from some selected schools in the Greater Accra Region.
