Nkwanta South Communities takes Steady Steps for Peace

A series of field visits by a joint team of Oti Regional Peace Council and the Security agencies to some conflict-affected communities within the Nkwanta South Municipality has revealed a resilient population eager to rebuild, heal, and secure peace.

This was after the inauguration of the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee by the NPC to oversee the implementation of the Nkwanta Peace Declaration.

The joint delegation recently concluded assessments of Abrewankor, Keri, Gekron, Odomi, Kormase, and Shiare.

The mission provided firsthand insights into the local security situation, structural damage, and the profound human impact of the recent violence.

A tale of two realities

The assessment highlighted varying degrees of destruction, displacement, and recovery across the enclave. While some communities still bear the visible, scars of past violence, others are beginning to experience relative calm, with a gradual return to normalcy.

Throughout the mission, team engagements with traditional authorities, opinion leaders, women, youth, community members, and security personnel demonstrated a powerful, shared desire for lasting peace.

Some residents expressed willingness to support the ongoing peace process, while calling assistance to ensure safe return of persons displaced, rebuilding destroyed houses and community infrastructure, as well as revitalize essential farming activities.

The mission’s observations strongly underscored that consolidating these fragile gains requires sustained collaboration.

By this effort, the National Peace Council, has shown its readiness to continue working with security agencies, traditional leaders, local authorities, and civil society organizations through peace education, community confidence-building measures, reconciliation initiatives, and the rigorous monitoring of signed peace agreements.
