Volta Regional Peace Council Encourages Abutia Senior High Technical School Students to Build Peace Through Positive Choices
The Volta Regional Peace Council organized a Peace Education Programme for students of Abutia Senior High Technical School under the theme “Understanding Conflict and Building Peaceful Co-existence.”
The programme, held on 7th July 2026 at Abutia Senior High Technical School, formed part of the National Peace Council’s ongoing efforts to promote peace education among young people and strengthen their understanding of peaceful conflict management, responsible behaviour, and positive relationships.
The initiative aimed to enhance students’ understanding of conflict as a normal part of human interaction and promote constructive approaches to resolving disagreements. It also sought to equip students with practical skills in communication, negotiation, active listening, and peer mediation while promoting mutual respect, tolerance, inclusion, and appreciation of diversity within the school community.
The event was attended by Dr. David Esinu Yao Normanyo, Regional Executive Secretary of the Volta Regional Peace Council; the Headmaster of Abutia Senior High Technical School; members of staff; and students of the institution.
Addressing the students, Dr. David Esinu Yao Normanyo reminded them that the decisions they make today play an important role in shaping the individuals they become in the future. He explained that peace is not only demonstrated during major conflicts but is also reflected in everyday choices and actions.
He encouraged students to demonstrate peace by respecting their classmates, obeying school rules, speaking truthfully, and treating others with fairness and dignity. According to him, building a peaceful society begins with the small decisions individuals make in their daily interactions.
Dr. Normanyo advised students not to allow anger, pride, peer pressure, or the desire to impress others to influence their actions. Instead, he encouraged them to carefully consider the consequences of their decisions and choose responses that build trust, strengthen relationships, and promote harmony.
He emphasized that students who demonstrate honesty, humility, discipline, and self-control naturally become positive examples that others can look up to. He therefore encouraged them to allow their character and actions to reflect the values of peace and responsible citizenship.
Concluding his address, Dr. Normanyo challenged the students to become ambassadors of peace by promoting integrity, respect, and peaceful living within their school and communities. He reminded them that the greatest influence they can have is through the positive example they set for others every day.
The peace education engagement provided students with practical knowledge on conflict prevention, peaceful conflict resolution, effective communication, and the importance of dialogue in managing disagreements. Students were encouraged to embrace tolerance, respect diversity, and contribute to creating a safe and supportive learning environment.
The National Peace Council remains committed to strengthening peace education initiatives in schools across Ghana as part of efforts to nurture responsible young people who can contribute to peaceful coexistence and national development.
