Volta Regional Peace Council Encourages Ziavi Senior High Technical School Students to Build a Culture of Peace
The Volta Regional Peace Council organized a Peace Education Programme for students of Ziavi Senior High Technical School under the theme “Understanding Conflict and Building Peaceful Co-existence.”
The programme, held on 2nd July 2026 at Ziavi Senior High Technical School, formed part of the National Peace Council’s continuous efforts to promote peace education among young people and strengthen students’ capacity to prevent and manage conflicts through dialogue and peaceful approaches.
The initiative aimed to enhance students’ understanding of conflict as a normal part of human interaction and promote positive approaches to conflict resolution. It also focused on equipping students with practical skills in communication, negotiation, active listening, and peer mediation while encouraging mutual respect, tolerance, inclusion, and appreciation of diversity within the school community.
The event was attended by Rev. Elorm Courage Godswill, Member of the Volta Regional Peace Council; Dr. David Esinu Yao Normanyo, Regional Executive Secretary of the Volta Regional Peace Council; Mr. Dominic Yevutse, Assistant Headmaster of Ziavi Senior High Technical School; teachers; and students of the institution.
Addressing the students, Rev. Elorm Courage Godswill emphasized that peace is a shared responsibility and should not be seen as the responsibility of only a few individuals or institutions. He explained that while the National Peace Council has the mandate to promote peace and prevent conflicts, lasting peace can only be achieved when individuals consciously choose to live peacefully with one another.
Rev. Godswill expressed concern about the increasing incidents of violence and indiscipline reported in some Senior High Schools, noting that many of these situations often begin with simple misunderstandings that are allowed to escalate.
He encouraged students to exercise patience, respect school rules, and avoid actions that could threaten the peaceful atmosphere of their school. He reminded them that every student has the ability to influence others positively by choosing dialogue instead of confrontation.
In his address, Dr. David Esinu Yao Normanyo, Regional Executive Secretary of the Volta Regional Peace Council, reminded students that disagreements are a normal part of everyday life and should not be allowed to create division among people.
He encouraged students to develop the habit of listening carefully before responding and to make efforts to understand the concerns and perspectives of others. He explained that respect and effective communication are important tools for preventing minor misunderstandings from developing into major conflicts.
Dr. Normanyo further advised students to be mindful of their influence on their peers, noting that simple actions such as refusing to spread rumours, discouraging fights, and standing up for positive values can make a significant contribution to promoting peace.
He encouraged students to become role models who inspire their colleagues through honesty, discipline, respect, and responsible behaviour. He concluded by urging them to leave a legacy of peace in their school, emphasizing that true achievement is not about winning arguments but about preserving relationships and contributing to a safe and supportive learning environment.
The peace education programme provided students with practical knowledge on conflict prevention, peaceful conflict management, communication, empathy, and dialogue. Students were encouraged to reject violence and become ambassadors of peace within their school and communities.
