National Peace Council Convenes Inter-Party Dialogue to Strengthen Ghana’s Democratic Peace

The National Peace Council (NPC) has in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), the National Media Commission (NMC) and UNDP Ghana convened an Inter-Party Dialogue to Foster Social and Sustainable Democracy in Accra.

The dialogue which brought together representatives of political parties, the Electoral Commission, media associations and other key governance stakeholders reflected on Ghana’s democratic journey, electoral lessons and mechanisms for sustaining peace.

Among some of the issues touched on included emerging challenges in Ghana’s political environment and identify practical measures to strengthen inter-party dialogue, responsible political communication and security cooperation.

The role of the media and political actors in shaping public discourse, including concerns around media excesses, inflammatory rhetoric and other forms of political communication that can heighten tensions and undermine social cohesion were touched on at the dialogue.

The dialogue forms part of the broader Political Party Trust Building Programme, which was consensually adopted as one of the Ada Recommendations to enhance dialogue, trust and consensus-building among political parties and key governance actors.

The initiative reflects a shared understanding that Ghana’s democratic resilience depends not only on the conduct of credible elections, but also on the ability of political actors and institutions to manage differences peacefully, communicate responsibly and maintain constructive channels of engagement before, during and after elections.

The NPC encouraged political parties, the media, state institutions, civil society and other stakeholders to embrace early dialogue, responsible communication and collaborative conflict prevention as essential tools for protecting Ghana’s peace.

The National Peace Council remains committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to build stronger platforms for dialogue, strengthen trust among political actors and contribute to a peaceful, inclusive and sustainable democratic future for Ghana.
