Peace Education: Empowering Students To Prevent And Resolve Conflict
The Ahafo Regional Peace Council, in collaboration with Mim Senior High School, has organised a peace education programme aimed at equipping students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to prevent, manage and peacefully resolve conflicts within the school and the wider community.
Held on 2 September 2026 at Mim Senior High School in Mim, Ahafo Region, the programme brought together students, school management, teaching staff, student leaders, representatives of the Ahafo Regional Peace Council and other invited guests.
Building Skills for Peaceful Conflict Resolution
The session focused on helping students understand the causes and dynamics of conflict, particularly conflicts that may arise among students, between students and teachers, and within the broader school environment.
Participants were reminded that conflict is a natural part of human interaction, but the way people respond to disagreements can determine whether a conflict escalates or is resolved peacefully.
Students were encouraged to develop practical approaches to conflict management, including:
- Effective communication and active listening
- Emotional management and self-control
- Dialogue and negotiation
- Respect for different views and perspectives
- Avoiding retaliation and violent responses
- Seeking peaceful solutions to disagreements
Students as Peace Ambassadors
A key message of the programme was the important role students can play in promoting peace within their schools and communities.
Students were encouraged to become Peace Ambassadors and positive role models among their peers, using their influence to discourage violence, promote respectful relationships and encourage peaceful approaches to resolving disagreements.
The programme forms part of efforts by the National Peace Council and its Regional Peace Councils to strengthen peace education and conflict prevention among young people and to nurture a culture of dialogue and peaceful coexistence from an early age.
Creating a Peaceful School Environment
Through initiatives such as this, students are equipped not only to respond constructively to conflicts when they arise, but also to recognise behaviours and situations that could contribute to tension and take steps to prevent escalation.
The engagement at Mim Senior High School therefore provided an opportunity to promote a school environment where communication replaces confrontation, dialogue replaces retaliation, and respect becomes the foundation for peaceful coexistence.
