Eastern Regional Peace Council Holds Radio Engagement on International Women’s Day of Peace and Disarmament
The National Peace Council Ghana through the Eastern Regional Peace Council (ERPC), in collaboration with the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly and Rite FM, Somanya, organized a radio engagement programme on Thursday, 21st May 2026, ahead of the International Women’s Day of Peace and Disarmament celebration.
The engagement was held under the theme: “From Inclusion to Impact: Women Leading Peace and Local Governance” and aimed at promoting public awareness on the vital role women play in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and local governance processes.
Objectives of the Engagement
The programme sought to:
- Promote awareness on the contributions of women to peacebuilding and community development.
- Encourage inclusive participation of women in leadership, decision-making, and local governance.
- Educate citizens on the significance of International Women’s Day of Peace and Disarmament.
- Strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in advancing gender inclusion and peaceful coexistence.
Key Discussions
Speaking during the live radio discussion, Mr. Osmond Appiah Danquah, Senior Programmes Manager of the Eastern Regional Peace Council, emphasized the important role women continue to play in mediation, dialogue facilitation, conflict prevention, and promoting social cohesion within communities.
He explained that the inclusion of women in leadership and governance structures contributes significantly to sustainable peace and development. According to him, women possess valuable skills and perspectives that are essential in addressing community challenges and promoting peaceful coexistence.
Mr. Danquah further encouraged traditional authorities, institutions, youth groups, and community members to deliberately create opportunities that support women’s active involvement in governance and peacebuilding initiatives. He stressed that moving “from inclusion to impact” requires intentional support, empowerment, and recognition of women’s contributions within society.
Mr. Kwabena Adu, Development Planning Officer at the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, also spoke on preparations towards the upcoming International Women’s Day of Peace and Disarmament celebration scheduled to take place in Somanya.
He encouraged stakeholders and community members to actively participate in activities surrounding the celebration and emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between local authorities, civil society organizations, and citizens in promoting gender inclusion, peace education, and sustainable local development.
