Peace Education and Sensitization for Junior High School Students (Greater Accra Region )
The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC), in collaboration with CHRAJ-GAR, organized a peace education and sensitization programme for students of Calvary Methodist (1) Basic School in the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly. The engagement aimed at promoting positive behaviour, tolerance, inclusivity, and peaceful coexistence among basic school pupils while strengthening awareness of the Council’s mandate.
The project was designed to educate pupils on the importance of respect, kindness, and empathy, raise awareness about bullying and its effects on individuals and the school environment, promote inclusivity and acceptance of diversity, encourage positive peer relationships and teamwork, and guide students on responsible behaviour in school and daily interactions. It also introduced students to the existence of the Council and its mandate in promoting peace and conflict prevention.
The expected outcomes of the programme included increased understanding among pupils of respect, tolerance, unity, and non-violence; improved awareness of the effects of bullying and encouragement to avoid such behaviours; improved attitudes in peer interactions; greater willingness to include and support one another; promotion of a more positive and supportive school environment; and increased awareness of the Council’s existence and mandate.
The project was funded by the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC) and implemented in collaboration with Calvary Methodist (1) Basic School and CHRAJ-GAR. It took place on 12th June 2026 at the school premises. No dignitaries were officially listed for the programme.
In his presentation, George Oko Mensah (Ag. Regional Executive Secretary, GARPC) provided an overview of the Council, explaining its mandate and role in promoting peace and preventing conflicts within the Greater Accra Region and Ghana. He sensitized students on violence, its forms, and its effects on individuals, families, schools, and society, noting that violence often leads to broken relationships, emotional trauma, disciplinary challenges, and disruption of peaceful coexistence. He further guided students on practical ways of preventing and managing conflicts, encouraging dialogue, mediation, and the use of appropriate reporting channels. He advised students to avoid situations that may lead to conflict and to always embrace peaceful approaches in resolving disagreements.
Madam Martha Deribaa (Programmes Manager) emphasized the values of peace, tolerance, and inclusivity, encouraging students to appreciate diversity within the classroom and school environment. She highlighted that diversity enriches learning and fosters mutual understanding. She also stressed the importance of respect between students and teachers as a foundation for discipline and cooperation. Furthermore, she encouraged the use of dialogue in resolving misunderstandings, advising students to communicate openly and respectfully rather than resorting to violence.
The programme engaged pupils from Calvary Methodist (1) Basic School, with participation from CHRAJ-GAR and GARPC. The sensitization contributed to strengthening peace education and promoting a safer, more inclusive school environment.
