Stakeholder Engagement on Strengthening Institutional Collaboration for Peaceful Elections (Greater Accra Region)
The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC) held a stakeholder engagement meeting at Ridge aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration and improving the performance of Council operations. The engagement was organized in collaboration with the Electoral Commission (EC) – Greater Accra Regional Office and focused on deepening cooperation between the two institutions to promote peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral processes.
The objective of the engagement was to promote increased understanding of Council operations, enhance visibility and utilization of the Council, raise awareness of its mandate, promote the exchange of institutional goodwill, encourage cooperative and collaborative relationships, foster synergy among stakeholders, and educate partners on the Council’s relevance to national peace and development.
The expected outcomes included improved stakeholder understanding of Council operations, enhanced visibility and utilization of the Council, strengthened cooperative and collaborative relationships, improved exchange of institutional goodwill, stronger alliances and synergies among stakeholders, and greater awareness of the Council’s contribution to national peace and development.
The programme was funded by the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC) and implemented in collaboration with the Electoral Commission – Greater Accra Regional Office. It took place on 12th June 2026 at Ridge.
Dignitaries present included Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey (GARPC Chairman), Dr. Afua Boatemaa Yakohene (GARPC Council Member), Mr. George Oko Mensah (Ag. Regional Executive Secretary, GARPC), Mrs. Gladys Prinkrah (EC Regional Director), and Mrs. Victoria Yakubu (EC Deputy Regional Director).
In his remarks, Mr. George Oko Mensah emphasized the Council’s fourfold mandate of conflict prevention, management, resolution, and sustainable peacebuilding. He noted that GARPC recognizes the Electoral Commission as the sole constitutional authority responsible for the conduct of elections and highlighted the importance of collaboration to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections in Ghana. He further indicated the Council’s active role in resolving electoral disputes at national, regional, and constituency levels, and referenced collaboration during the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election, where joint electoral education and peacebuilding efforts helped enhance electoral stability and voter confidence.
Mrs. Gladys Prinkrah commended the Council for its continuous efforts in safeguarding national peace, especially during election periods characterized by heightened tensions. She acknowledged the critical role played by GARPC in supporting electoral processes and emphasized the importance of professionalism, integrity, and honesty in the work of the Electoral Commission. She also highlighted the value of inter-institutional collaboration, particularly in peacebuilding initiatives such as dialogue with political parties and stakeholders, which strengthens trust and supports the Commission’s mandate.
Discussions at the engagement focused on deepening inter-institutional alliances to improve operational efficiency, strengthening the link between peacebuilding and electoral processes to prevent electoral violence, organizing joint programmes to pool resources and expertise toward shared goals, and addressing funding challenges and opportunities in the execution of statutory responsibilities.
The engagement brought together the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council and the Electoral Commission – Greater Accra Regional Office, reinforcing their shared commitment to sustaining peace, strengthening democracy, and ensuring credible electoral outcomes in Ghana.
