Volta Regional Peace Council Promotes Peace Education at Nkonya Senior High School
The Volta Regional Peace Council of the National Peace Council has organized a Peace Education Programme for students of Nkonya Senior High School under the theme “Understanding Conflict and Building Peaceful Co-existence.”
The programme, held on 30th June 2026 at Nkonya Senior High School, formed part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to promote peace education among young people and equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and manage conflicts peacefully.
The initiative sought to enhance students’ understanding of conflict as a normal part of human interaction, promote positive approaches to conflict resolution, strengthen communication and interpersonal skills, and encourage students to become ambassadors of peace within their schools and communities.
The event was attended by Rev. Seth K. Mawutor, Chairman of the Volta Regional Peace Council; Alhaji Anass Dawuda, Member of the Volta Regional Peace Council; Dr. David Esinu Yao Normanyo, Regional Executive Secretary of the Volta Regional Peace Council; the Headmaster of Nkonya Senior High School; members of staff; and students of the school.
Addressing the students, Rev. Seth K. Mawutor explained that one of the core responsibilities of the National Peace Council is to prevent conflicts before they occur. He emphasized that conflict prevention remains one of the most effective approaches to building peaceful communities and maintaining social harmony.
Rev. Mawutor expressed concern about the increasing incidents of violence reported in some Senior High Schools across the country and noted that such occurrences should serve as a wake-up call for students and other stakeholders. He reminded students that conflicts can have long-term consequences on their education, future careers, and the reputation of their schools.
He therefore encouraged students to choose dialogue over violence, respect one another, and adopt peaceful methods of resolving disagreements whenever conflicts arise.
In his presentation, Dr. David Esinu Yao Normanyo, Regional Executive Secretary of the Volta Regional Peace Council, reminded students that disagreements are a normal part of everyday life and should not always be viewed negatively. He explained that while conflict is inevitable, what matters most is how individuals respond when differences emerge.
Dr. Normanyo encouraged students to remain calm, listen carefully to one another, and think before reacting, particularly during emotionally charged situations. He stressed the importance of patience, understanding, and effective communication in preventing conflicts from escalating.
He further advised students to avoid insults, bullying, and retaliation, noting that many serious conflicts often begin as simple misunderstandings that are left unresolved. He encouraged them to seek support from teachers, school counsellors, or trusted adults whenever they encounter challenges that they are unable to resolve on their own.
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Normanyo challenged the students to become ambassadors of peace within their school by demonstrating respect, setting positive examples for their peers, and promoting unity and understanding in their daily interactions.
The interactive engagement provided students with practical insights into conflict prevention, peaceful conflict management, active listening, negotiation, peer mediation, and the importance of dialogue in resolving disagreements. Students were encouraged to reject violence and embrace peaceful coexistence as a foundation for personal growth and academic success.
The National Peace Council remains committed to promoting a culture of peace, tolerance, and non-violence among young people through sustained peace education initiatives. By empowering students with the knowledge and skills to manage conflicts constructively, the Council continues to contribute to the development of peaceful schools and resilient communities across Ghana.
