North East Regional Peace Council Strengthens Capacity of Local Peace Committees on Early Warning and Conflict Prevention

The North East Regional Peace Council (NERPC) has organized a two-day capacity-building training for members of the Bunkpurugu and Yunyoo Local Peace Committees (LPCs) on Early Warning and Early Response Mechanism (EWER) to strengthen community-level conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts.

The training, held from 30th June to 1st July 2026 at the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Assembly (Assembly Hall), was designed to enhance the capacity of LPC members in conflict prevention, conflict analysis, early warning, and response mechanisms.

The initiative aimed to educate participants on the fundamental concepts of conflict, early warning, and early response; strengthen their ability to identify and analyze local conflict indicators and triggers; familiarize them with the National Peace Council’s conflict reporting protocols and data collection tools; and develop practical early response strategies through improved coordination with traditional authorities and state security agencies.

The training brought together members of the Bunkpurugu Local Peace Committee and the Yunyoo Local Peace Committee, with participation from the North East Regional Peace Council.

Addressing participants, Mr. Haruna Ibrahim, Regional Executive Secretary of the North East Regional Peace Council, explained that the objective of the training was to strengthen the capacity of Local Peace Committee members to effectively contribute to conflict prevention, conflict analysis, early warning, and reporting within their respective communities.

He emphasized the importance of community-based peace structures in identifying emerging conflicts early and supporting timely interventions before disputes escalate into violence. He encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained to enhance peacebuilding efforts and strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The Chairman of the Bunkpurugu Local Peace Committee, Mr. Moisob Emmanuel, encouraged participants to take full advantage of the training opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills. He emphasized the need for collective efforts among community stakeholders to promote peaceful coexistence and effective conflict management.

Mr. Dawda D. David, Chairman of the Yunyoo Local Peace Committee, stressed the importance of neutrality in the work of Local Peace Committees. He reminded members that their role is not to take sides in conflicts but to promote dialogue, facilitate fair mediation, and support peaceful solutions that benefit all parties.

The two-day training provided participants with practical knowledge and skills in identifying conflict indicators, understanding triggers of disputes, reporting emerging risks, and developing appropriate early response strategies. The sessions encouraged active participation through discussions, experience sharing, and engagement among participants.

Participants demonstrated strong commitment throughout the training by sharing experiences from their communities, asking questions, and engaging in discussions on practical approaches to strengthening local peace mechanisms.

The training successfully enhanced participants’ understanding of Early Warning and Early Response mechanisms and reinforced their commitment to proactive peacebuilding and conflict prevention.

The North East Regional Peace Council continues to support the strengthening of Local Peace Committees as important community-based structures for promoting dialogue, preventing conflicts, and building sustainable peace across the region.
