Council ChairmanMost Rev. Samuel Nkuah-Boateng

Western North Regional Peace Council

The Region is known to be one of the most peaceful regions in the country with relatively low crime data and electoral violence. There are however few cases of transborder crimes such as human trafficking and increase in commercial sex activities attributed to the alleged intrusion of illegal immigrants from the neighboring Ivory Coast. The Region is also hurdled with the negative consequences of illegal mining activities which not only destroy the environment but also increase social vices. Furthermore, the region suffers a lot of unresolved chieftaincy conflicts and a few community clashes and vigilante acts which happens occasionally.

Geographically, the Western North Region is one of the six new regions of Ghana created in 2019. The region is bounded by the Ivory Coast on the West, the Central Region on the Southeast and Ashanti, Ahafo, Bono East and Bono Regions in the north. It has nine (9) administrative and electoral districts/constituencies spread over six (6) traditional paramountcies.

The Region is predominately inhabited by Akans with the major group being Sefwi, Ayeni and Brosa. There are other groups like the Krobos, Kyiropong, Akwapim, Ewes and Gas among other tribes across the country. Economically, the Region contributes largely in terms of cocoa, timber, coffee, bauxite, gold and other foodstuffs to the National GDP. In trade and commerce, commercial trading activities in major agricultural produce and wood products take place in major towns like Juaboso, Bodi, Bonsu Nkwanta, Bibiani as well Sefwi Wiawso Market places.
