NATIONAL PEACE COUNCIL DEEPENS PEACE IN 19-YEAR SUNANI AND SAMPA CHIEFTAINCY DISPUTE
- The National Peace Council (NPC) has concluded a mission to Sunyani and Sampa in the Bono Region, meeting the two claimants to the Sampa paramountcy in a renewed push to end a chieftaincy conflict that has caused violence and loss of lives and properties since 2015.
- The 17–20 August mission, which included members of the NPC’s National Governing Board and the Bono Regional Peace Council, is part of the Council’s focus on three priority conflict zones nationwide.
- In Sunyani, the delegation held security briefings with the Regional Minister and REGSEC, then met separately with the Paramount Chief, Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, and the Sunyani Queen mother, Nana Akosua Asor Sika Dua Brayie, aimed at easing tensions between the two following the Chief’s recent gazetting.
- At Sampa, the team met the District Chief Executive and the District Security Council (DISEC) before separately engaging Nana Toloe Samgba Gyafla II and Nana Sammor-Duah II, along with the area’s Muslim leadership, urging all parties to de-escalate, follow due process, and embrace non-violence.
- The Council commends the cooperation and turnout at the meetings, which will inform our next steps. We encourage the youth, traditional leadership and all stakeholders to exercise the highest restraint and pursue only civil, democratic means to address the impasse. The NPC thanks the Bono Regional Minister, security agencies, and traditional and religious leaders for their support, and pledges continued engagement to consolidate peace in Sampa.
