POLITICAL PARTY TRUST BUILDING PROGRAMME AND INTRA AND INTER-PARTY MECHANISM FOR ADDRESSING CONFLICT IN CENTRAL REGION
19th March 2024
The Chairman of the Central Regional Peace Council, Rt. Rev. Richardson Aboagye Andam, has called on political parties in the region to do all they can to ensure that the peace the region is enjoying is maintained before, during, and after the 2024 general elections. He said, credible and peaceful elections are important measures of democratic and good government in developed countries. However, elections in most developing nations, particularly in Africa, have not been ideal because they cause enormous misery, stress, violence, and wanton destruction of life and property for the people.
He made this call during a one-day dialogue with politicians in Cape Coast. The regional dialogue was organised by the National Peace Council (NPC) with funding from the Star Ghana Foundation with the objective of strategically building consensus and trust to prevent electoral violence. The participants were from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the People’s National Convention (PNC), the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), and the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP).
The Some of the key points discussed during the dialogue include the following:
⦁ The use of Vigilantes in the 2024 election
⦁ Distribution of money and other gifts to electorate, etc.
⦁ Declaration of election results by political parties and their members.
⦁ Defacing of posters.
⦁ Biased media reportage.
⦁ Campaign violence.
The Regional Director of the Commission on Civil Education admonished the political parties and candidates to behave in a manner that is expected of them. The Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, Mr. George Amoh, told the participants not to use provocative and abusive language during their campaign to ensure that the region maintains its peace.
